When a particular product enjoys increasing popularity, the manufacturers smarten up and come up with innovative ways to draw more consumers into the market. This is the basic approach to increasing the demand of a product and making it even more popular than it is today. You can notice a similar trend in the e-liquid market. As more and more people switch from smoking to vaping, different brands of e-liquid are being developed to entice the brand new consumers. Making consumers buy a specific brand of e-liquid is a simple marketing strategy that the manufacturers are using to boost their revenue and widen their margins. One such strategy involves the use of the word organic. This is a term that has almost been overused in nearly every sector of the food industry with the sole purpose of garnering more attention towards a particular product. If you walk into a convenience or grocery store, you are sure to find a plethora of organic food and beverage products that are being sold off at higher prices. The reason why people are willing to pay a premium price for these products is because they are meant to be healthier than the other ordinary products on the shelves. This same marketing strategy is being put to effect in the e-liquid market.
What Does Organic Really Mean?
Before we make a verdict on whether or not organic e-liquids are credible products, it is important for us to fully understand the meaning of the word organic. This is a term that a lot of vapers are not familiar with. If you have been a smoker all your life, then you are perhaps completely alien to the “organic lifestyle” that many health conscious people have adopted for reasons best known to them. In order for something to be labelled and sold as organic, its manufacturing process has to be free from the use of chemical pesticides and the product itself has to meet the USDA organic standards. A restaurant or a grocery store cannot advertise its products as organic unless it has a stamp of approval from the USDA National Organic Program in the form of a certificate. What is really shocking is that a lot of the vape shops that sell so called organic e-liquids do not meet the standards of the USDA National Organic Program. Therefore, technically, these shops are not authorized to label their e-liquid products as organic commodities.
Propylene Glycol is a Non-Organic Synthetic Product
As many of you are aware, propylene glycol is used as a part of the base of any e-liquid product. The presence of this chemical substance makes sure that the vaper receives a throat hit from the e-liquid. It also serves the purpose of a binder, as it helps merge the flavours with the other ingredients in the base of the liquid. PG cannot be a natural product as it is manufactured synthetically. This is why your local farms do not have a production of PG. A laboratory facility is required for propylene glycol to be produced. Since it is not a natural product, the USDA cannot certify this as an organic commodity for consumption in any possible way. This is reason enough to believe that organic e-liquids cannot exist. But let’s not stop here. For the sake of convincing the proponents of organic e-liquids, let’s dig deeper into the problem.
PG shares many of its properties with ethanol, which can be rated as an organic compound. This leads some people to believe that ethanol can be used as a substitute of PG. However, they are wrong. This is because high concentrations of ethanol can be extremely dangerous for your health.
VG and Flavourings can be Organic
Vegetable glycerine, which is often used as a substitute of propylene glycol, can be organic. Since it is derived from vegetables, the manufacturers can produce organic e-liquids as long as they make sure that the vegetables have been organically grown. That being said, there are very few e-liquid products out there in the market that do not use PG at all. Most of the e-liquid products are made with a combination of PG and VG. The flavouring too is another problem that prevents e-liquids from being organic. Majority of the flavourings that are used in e-liquid production are not natural or organic.
Nicotine Is Not Organic According to the USDA
Even if we agree for the sake of argument that an organic e-liquid can exist in paper, it still leaves us with the stumbling block known as nicotine. Nicotine is one of the primary ingredients of an e-liquid and it is one of the oldest pesticides in the world that is extracted from tobacco leaves. The problem with nicotine is that it is not on the approved list of pesticides that can be used in an organic product. The USDA has not given nicotine the status of an organic product. Therefore, paying a premium price for an organic e-liquid product would be a waste of your money.
